Dispute Resolution

The Firm's Dispute Resolution Practice

Dispute resolution is one of the firm's important practice areas. The firm, which represents mostly corporate clients, has played a central role in many significant lawsuits which are long remembered as a part of Japanese legal history, or which are in highly specialized areas requiring advanced technical and other knowledge. In civil injunctive practice, the firm has pioneered in arguing and winning numerous creative provisional dispositions and attachment orders.

Major Categories of Cases

The firm has provided legal advice to countless business entities for resolution of disputes in a broad range of cases. Some of the substantive categories of dispute resolution cases for which the firm provides legal services are listed below:

  • Various types of domestic litigation, arbitration and mediation procedures, involving commercial, civil, administrative, labor, pharmaceutical, environmental, product liability, construction, intellectual property, securities, insurance, financing, franchise and other matters.
  • Insolvency proceedings including proceedings for bankruptcy, civil rehabilitation and corporate reorganization.
  • Quasi-judicial proceedings including administrative hearings and appeals involving the Fair Trade Commission, the Patent Office, the Marine Accident Inquiry Agency and the Labor Relations Commission.
  • Cases which include criminal law issues.

International Dispute Resolution

The firm has represented not only purely domestic business entities but also a large number of foreign business entities and their Japanese subsidiaries. One of the real strengths of the firm is its ability to communicate with foreign clients in English in the course of resolving their disputes.

Further, the firm frequently provides advice concerning lawsuits and disputes that arise in foreign countries, in close cooperation with major law firms in those foreign countries.

Litigation Group
