Brazil

In the 2000s, Brazil was one of the BRICs that achieved remarkable economic growth. Historically, many Japanese have emigrated to Brazil since the beginning of the 20th century, and it is estimated that approximately 2 million people of Japanese descent reside in Brazil. Through the efforts of these people, today, Brazil is considered as a pro-Japanese country, providing a favorable business environment for Japanese companies. Brazil is not only rich in natural resources, but also, with a population of over 200 million, is an extremely attractive market.

Recently, there were a series of major law reforms in Brazil, such as the introduction of new personal data protection regulations like the European GDPR, and major labor system reform, which have had a substantial impact on the operations of companies in Brazil. Given the signification time difference between Brazil and Japan, Japanese headquarters often face difficulties in effectively managing their subsidiaries in Brazil. We have several lawyers seconded to Brazilian law firms who have extensive knowledge and expertise on Brazilian legal matters.

Through our established connections with major local law firms, we provide a wide range of legal services to Japanese companies with operations in Brazil, such as incorporation of local subsidiaries, establishment or termination of joint ventures or technology alliances with local partners, M&A transactions (including merger control-related work), compliance matters, disputes and labor matters.
