Introduction
On 19 March 2021, new amendments to the Electronic Transactions Act (“ETA”) came into force, which, among others,
adopted the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records (with modifications) (“MLETR”). The purpose of
the MLETR is to facilitate the legal use of electronic transferable records both domestically and across borders, which
largely affects shipping and international trade. These amendments are in line with the Singapore Government’s larger
initiative to build a digital economy and digital society.
