In Memoriam: Hiroshi Kaneko

It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce the passing of Mr. Hiroshi Kaneko, a special advisor at Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu, on August 23, 2022. Private funeral services have already been held.

Mr. Kaneko graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo in 1953, where he subsequently held the positions of assistant professor and associate professor before serving as a professor from 1966 to 1991. He was a pioneer, a renowned scholar, and a prominent figure in the field of tax law and jurisprudence in Japan. He also served as a member of the Tax Commission and various governmental committees, many of which he chaired. In recognition of his long-standing contributions to tax law research, education, and reform, in 2019, he was awarded the Order of Culture, the highest cultural honor in Japan. In 2001, Mr. Kaneko joined our firm as a special advisor, and we were fortunate and privileged to have had his considerable insight and guidance for over 20 years.

We are eternally grateful to Mr. Kaneko for his guidance and express our sincere condolences to his bereaved family, friends, and colleagues.

 

Mr. Hiroshi Kaneko’s Biography

Mr. Kaneko graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Tokyo in 1953. He held the following academic positions in Japan: Research Associate, Associate Professor, and Professor, Law Faculty, University of Tokyo (1953-1991); Professor Emeritus, University of Tokyo (1991-); Professor, Graduate School of International Economic Law, Yokohama National University (1991-1996); Professor, Law Faculty, Gakushuin University (1996-2001); Professor, Graduate School, Toa University (2002-); and Special Advisor to the National Tax College (2001-2010).
He also held the following academic positions abroad: Special Student, Harvard Law School (1961-1963), Visiting Scholar, id. (1976-1977), and Specially Designated Visiting Scholar, id. (1992); Visiting Scholar, University of California Law School (Berkeley) (1979); Visiting Scholar, London University, School of Oriental and Asian Studies, Law Faculty (1985); Visiting Scholar, Munich University, Law Faculty, International Tax Law Research Institute (1985); Social Sciences Research Center of People’s Republic of China, Law Research Institute (1986); and Visiting Professor, Peking University, Tax Law Research Center (2006).
He was involved in and was a member of the following organizations: Japanese Society for Tax Law (President, 1972-1992); Japanese American Society for Legal Studies, Japan Public Law Association, Harvard Law School Association of Japan (President, 1993-1999); International Fiscal Association (Chairman of Japan Branch, 1976-2008); International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation (member of the Board of Trustees, 1993-1999, member of the Advisory Council, 1999-); Japan Tax Research Association (Special Advisor); and Japan Tax Research Institute (Executive Director).
