NO&T hosts the “Seminar concerning Acquisition of Japanese Corporations” in Shanghai

On October 24, 2002, Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu ("NO&T"), together with the Boston Consulting Group, hosted a seminar on the acquisition of Japanese corporations by Chinese corporations, held at the Okura Garden Hotel Shanghai.

The background of hosting such seminar was that during the period from the autumn of 2001 until the beginning of 2002, Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu represented the Shanghai Electric (Group) Corporation (the third largest Chinese government-owned corporation) in the successful business transfer of Akiyama Printing Machinery Manufacturing Corp, which was under civil rehabilitation proceedings. Since such business transfer was the first acquisition of a Japanese corporation by a Chinese government-owned corporation, it received great attention from many other government-owned corporations and the Shanghai city government. The seminar was sponsored by the Shanghai city government and was attended by about 40 executive officers of approximately 30 leading government-owned corporations, such as Shanghai Electric (Group) Corporation, Shanghai Optical Communication Corp., Shanghai Nonferrous Metals, Shanghai Shipbuilding Industry Company, etc.

At this seminar, three attorneys of Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu, Yasuharu Nagashima, Koji Morita and Masahiro Matsuoka and the Vice President of the Boston Consulting Group, Mr. Imamura, each gave a lecture and introduced Japan as a promising M&A market for Chinese corporations. In particular, the attorneys gave detailed explanations on the related legal procedures and employment relations unique to Japan, and answered many ardent questions from the participants.
